Monica Ursina Jäger’s practice is characterized by an engagement with mankind’s natural and constructed environment. In ink drawings, sculptures and objects, she explores the dynamic tension inherent in the differently determined views of nature, landscape and architecture as socially and culturally charged spatial constructions, as well as utopian categories. The drawing series ‘terrain vague’ (ink, pencil and pigment transfer) reflects on collective utopian concepts and intimate retreats. Deconstructing and re-contextualising various types of buildings these architectural visions include fragments of modernist houses and utopian structures as well as contemporary high rises and improvised shacks.
‘terrain vague’ examines the connections between urbanization, architecture and art and draws upon the rich heritage of unseen information encoded within architectural structures such as social, political or aesthetic agendas. With a sense of constantly shifting perceptions the work operates in the expanse between seeking to establish relationships between both real and idealized notions of space. Architectural space in this context acts as a catalyst and cipher for a range of other emotions relating to contemporary experience.
As Luc Lévesque writes in his short essay The Terrain Vague as Material – Some Observations: “Shifting from factual observation of the vacant lot to the more abstract of interstitial space expands our perspective to include a range of notions apt to stimulate discussion, whether linked directly to the «terrain vague» or not. Etymologically, interstitial denotes something found in between things. Referring to the notion of interval, it also means source of time. Thus the interstitial embraces not only such notions as openness, porosity, breach and relationship, but also those of process, transformation and location.”
The above mentioned «terrain vague», which is a term coined by Ignasi De Solà-Morales (1942–2001), describes a vacant, unused lot within a city as a space of chance.
